Do Electrolyte Drinks Actually Help With Hangovers?

Short answer: they fix the thirst. The research says the thirst and the hangover are two different problems, which is why fixing one doesn't do much for the other.
You know the specific misery. Head pounding, mouth like carpet, and a vague conviction that if you could just drink enough of something, this would lift.
So you buy the packet. And it helps, a bit. The thirst goes. The rest of it stays.
That gap between what the packet fixes and what it doesn't isn't in your head, and it isn't a dosing problem. It's the actual finding of the recent research, and it's the opposite of what most pages on this topic will tell you, largely because most of them are written by companies selling the packet.

The Short Answer
Bottom line: electrolyte drinks reliably fix the thirst, and the best current evidence says fixing the thirst doesn't measurably soften the hangover, because dehydration and hangover severity turn out to be two separate consequences of drinking, not one causing the other.

Three findings that reframe the whole question:
- Dehydration and hangover are independent. The 2024 review that everyone half-cites concluded exactly that, and added that dehydration effects were "usually mild and short-lasting" while hangovers were "relatively enduring."
- Inflammation is the leading explanation for what actually makes you feel terrible, from a different 2024 paper, by different authors, at a different university than the one usually credited.
- Water didn't fix it in testing. Water consumed during a hangover was not related to changes in hangover severity, and a June 2026 trial found drinking water while you drink didn't change hangover outcomes either.
That doesn't make electrolytes useless. It makes them a treatment for one symptom, sold as a treatment for all of them.
What Actually Causes a Hangover, If Not Dehydration?
Inflammation is the current leading answer. And the two 2024 papers behind this shift are constantly merged into one, including in most articles you'll find on this exact question.

Here's the correction, because it matters for what you do next.
Paper one: dehydration isn't the driver
Mackus and colleagues, published in the journal Alcohol in 2024, reviewed the evidence connecting hangover severity, thirst, and water consumption. Their conclusion, verbatim:
"these data suggests that alcohol hangover and dehydration are two co-occurring but independent consequences of alcohol consumption"
Independent is the load-bearing word. Both happen after you drink. Neither causes the other. The paper also notes that while hangovers were "typically relatively enduring," dehydration effects were "usually mild and short-lasting," which is the mismatch you've felt every time the drink helped for twenty minutes.
This team is at Utrecht University, which is why you'll see "the Utrecht study" referenced everywhere.
Paper two: inflammation is the mechanism
The "it's inflammation, not dehydration" claim is real, but it comes from a different paper by different authors at a different institution. Turner and colleagues, in Alcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, 2024, a narrative review from Imperial College London, reframes the hangover as a manifestation of sickness behaviour secondary to alcohol-induced inflammation.
Their proposed chain: alcohol metabolism generates free radicals that damage tissue, intestinal cells are lost, gut permeability rises, bacteria translocate, and the resulting immune activation produces the systemic misery. Not the fluid loss. The immune response.
Why the mix-up matters practically: if you believe Utrecht proved inflammation causes hangovers, you'll assume one research group has this settled. Two independent groups arriving at compatible conclusions from different directions is actually stronger evidence. But only if you know it's two groups.
Sickness behaviour, in this context, is a specific idea: the fatigue, aches, low mood and food aversion that show up during any immune response. It's why a hangover feels less like dehydration and more like a short flu.
Why You Pee So Much When You Drink
Alcohol suppresses the hormone that tells your kidneys to hold on to water. So you lose more fluid than you took in. The thirst is real, even though it isn't what's wrecking your morning.
Vasopressin (also called antidiuretic hormone, or ADH) is your body's water-retention signal. When it's working, your kidneys concentrate urine and conserve fluid. Alcohol interferes with its release.
A human study in the American Journal of Physiology tracked this directly: as plasma vasopressin fell after ethanol, free water clearance rose and urine osmolality dropped. In plainer terms: more water out, more dilute. The same work found ethanol blunted the vasopressin response even to a salt infusion, meaning alcohol partly disconnects the sensor from the response. (It's a small, old study (four subjects) but the mechanism it describes is standard physiology, and NIH's own reference material on vasopressin describes the same effect.)
So the fluid loss is genuine, and so is the thirst. What the 2024 research adds is that this particular problem is the mild, short one. And it's running alongside the hangover rather than causing it.
What Electrolytes Actually Fix, and Don't
Sorted by whether the symptom is a fluid-loss problem. That's the only question that determines whether a drink touches it.

Read the "no" column. That's most of a hangover.
The honest framing is narrow: an electrolyte drink is a good treatment for being thirsty, and being thirsty is a modest and short-lived part of what's wrong with you. Any page telling you otherwise is selling something. And the Mackus review is blunt on the broader point, noting there is currently no commercially available hangover treatment whose efficacy has been scientifically proven.
Does Drinking Water Even Help?
Less than folk wisdom claims. And this is where the evidence gets genuinely uncomfortable for the entire hangover-drink category.

Two separate lines of evidence:
The survey data. In the Mackus review, water consumed during or directly after drinking had "only a modest effect" in preventing next-day hangover. And water consumed during a hangover was not related to changes in hangover severity or thirst. The paper's flat conclusion is that "water consumption was not effective to alleviate the alcohol hangover."
The 2026 trial. A randomized crossover trial published in Frontiers in Pharmacology in June 2026 tested this directly: participants drank sake with or without intermittent water. The authors concluded that intermittent water intake "did not significantly alter ethanol disposition or pharmacodynamic parameters, suggesting it did not affect hangover symptoms."
That trial deserves its caveats stated plainly, because it's small: 13 healthy Japanese men, all with the same ALDH2 genotype, open-label, using sake specifically. The authors flag all of this themselves. It's a data point consistent with the survey evidence, not a verdict on its own.
Neither finding means you should skip water. Losing fluid and not replacing it is its own problem, and drinking water instead of another round is straightforwardly good for you. It means the specific belief (that hydration is the lever that controls hangover severity) doesn't hold up.
Where Electrolytes Still Make Sense
Two situations, both narrow, both honest.

When you've genuinely lost a lot of fluid. If drinking involved heat, dancing, sweating, or vomiting, you've lost meaningful sodium along with water. And plain water alone replaces one and dilutes the other. This is a real electrolyte use case. It just isn't a hangover cure; it's fluid replacement that happens to be occurring after drinking.
When you'd otherwise drink nothing. If a flavoured drink means you actually rehydrate and a glass of water means you don't, that's a genuine behavioural win. Small, but real.
On format: oral rehydration solutions are built for absorption rather than taste, pairing sodium with glucose, which is why the WHO formulation is water, salt and sugar together rather than salt alone. The sugar isn't a flavour compromise; it's part of the transport mechanism that pulls sodium and water across the gut wall.

Is an oral rehydration solution better than a sports drink for a hangover? For rehydration specifically, yes. Oral rehydration solutions combine salt and sugar in proportions designed to move water across the gut wall efficiently, which is why the WHO formulation contains both. But rehydrating efficiently still only addresses the thirst component, not hangover severity.
Do hangover IVs work better than drinking electrolytes? An IV delivers fluid faster, which is a real difference if you genuinely can't keep liquids down. But it's delivering the same thing (fluid and electrolytes) against the same limitation: if fluid loss isn't what's driving hangover severity, a faster route to replacing it doesn't change the ceiling.
