Does Coffee Actually Dehydrate You?

For your usual two or three cups, no. But the study everyone cites to prove that isn't the study they think it is. And there's a real dose where the answer flips, which almost nobody mentions.

The "coffee dehydrates you" myth has been dead for about a decade. Good.

The problem is what replaced it. Search this question and you'll find dozens of pages confidently citing "a 16-study review in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" that supposedly settled it.

That paper doesn't exist. Three real papers got welded into one citation, and the welding lost the most useful finding of all three: that whether coffee dehydrates you depends almost entirely on how much you drink at once, and there's a measurable point where the answer changes.

The Short Answer

Bottom line: at normal intakes coffee hydrates you about as well as water, and the extra trip to the bathroom costs you far less than the cup gave you. But somewhere around four to five strong cups in a single sitting, that stops being true.

Three things worth knowing:

  • The famous citation is a mash-up. The "16 studies" and the "AJCN" belong to two different papers, and neither is the coffee-specific one.
  • The effect is small, and it varies enormously between people. The average extra urine works out to about 109 mL, less than half a cup. But the spread around that average is so wide that it barely describes anyone.
  • Dose is the whole story. Two cups' worth of caffeine didn't disturb fluid balance at all. Four to five strong cups at once nearly doubled urine output, and took extra electrolytes out with it.

The Citation Everyone Gets Wrong

"A 16-study review in the AJCN found coffee doesn't dehydrate you" combines three separate papers published in three different journals across three different years.

So the "16 studies" comes from the Zhang meta-analysis. The "AJCN" comes from Maughan. And the finding people are actually reaching for (that coffee hydrates comparably to water) comes from Killer, in PLOS ONE.

Why this matters beyond pedantry: the merged version implies one large, definitive review settled the question. What actually exists is a small coffee-specific crossover study, a meta-analysis about caffeine generally, and a beverage-ranking trial where coffee was one entry among thirteen. Each has different scope and different limits. And the merged citation obscures the dose-dependence that makes the real answer useful.

The Actual Coffee Study

Fifty habitual coffee drinkers, four cups a day versus the same volume of water, measured with a deuterium tracer. No meaningful difference.

In plain terms: the same 50 men did three days on coffee and three days on water, and researchers measured their actual body water both times. It came out the same.

Killer, Blannin and Jeukendrup's 2014 study in PLOS ONE took 50 men who already drank 3–6 cups a day and ran each of them through both conditions: three days drinking four cups of coffee daily, three days drinking the same volume of plain water. Food, fluid and exercise were held constant.

The measurement is what makes this study worth citing. Rather than guessing at hydration from urine colour, the researchers had participants drink a harmless traceable form of water and then measured how much total body water each person was actually carrying, before and after. That's the real thing, not a proxy for it.

The finding: no significant differences across a wide range of hydration indicators between the coffee and water conditions. The authors concluded coffee provides "similar hydrating qualities to water" when consumed in moderation by caffeine-habituated males.

That's a genuinely strong design for this question. But note the scope precisely, because most pages don't: 50 men, all habitual coffee drinkers, at a moderate dose. It doesn't tell you what happens to someone who rarely drinks coffee, and it doesn't tell you what happens at double the dose. That second gap is where the interesting finding lives.

How Big Is the Diuretic Effect, Really?

Real, small, and so variable between people that the average barely describes anyone.

In plain terms: caffeine does make you pee a bit more, but "a bit" here means less than half a cup, against the two or three cups of liquid that delivered it. You end up well ahead.

Zhang and colleagues' 2015 meta-analysis in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport pooled 16 studies at a median caffeine dose of 300 mg, about two to three cups of coffee.

The result: an average increase in urine volume of about 109 mL, or roughly 16%. That's a shade under half a cup.

But the average is the least interesting number here. The variation between individuals was nearly twice the size of the average itself, meaning some people in these studies produced substantially more urine after caffeine, and others essentially none at all. An extra 109 mL is a real finding about groups and a nearly useless prediction for any one person, including you.

Now put it against the volume that delivered it. Those two to three cups are 400–600 mL of fluid going in. Losing an extra ~109 mL while gaining 400–600 mL isn't a wash. It's a clear net gain.

The meta-analysis added one more useful detail: the diuretic effect was negated by exercise. Whatever caffeine does to your kidneys at rest, exercise's own fluid-conserving response overrides it.

The Dose Where It Actually Flips

This is the finding every competitor page omits: there's a threshold, it's been measured, and above it coffee genuinely does increase both fluid and electrolyte losses.

In plain terms: two cups behaves like water. Four to five strong cups in one sitting does not. And that's the line almost nobody tells you about.

A 2017 trial in Frontiers in Nutrition, titled unambiguously "Coffee with High but Not Low Caffeine Content Augments Fluid and Electrolyte Excretion at Rest," sat casual coffee drinkers down with water, a low-caffeine coffee, or a high-caffeine one, and measured what came out over the next three hours.

Two things jump out.

The low dose behaved like water. Arguably a touch better on both measures. That's the reassuring moderate-coffee finding, replicated.

The high dose nearly doubled urine output. And look at the last column, because it's the part that gets left out of every summary of this study: it isn't just extra water leaving. It's extra electrolytes going out with it. The authors concluded that coffee at the higher dose "can induce an acute diuretic effect," while the lower dose does not disturb fluid balance at all.

So what does that actually look like? For a 70 kg adult, the high dose is about 420 mg of caffeine in one sitting: roughly four to five strong cups, or a couple of large speciality drinks, taken together rather than spread across the day.

That's not a normal morning. It's a deadline. A long drive. A pre-workout scoop landing on top of an already caffeinated afternoon. If you've ever finished a big cold brew and thought I should probably drink some water, that instinct was correct, and this is the study behind it.

So the honest answer isn't "coffee doesn't dehydrate you." It's "your normal coffee habit doesn't, and there's a specific dose where that changes."

So Does Coffee Count Toward Your Daily Fluid?

At ordinary intakes, yes. Count it.

The practical rules that follow from the three studies above:

  • Two to three cups spread through the day counts as fluid. The volume you drink comfortably exceeds the extra volume you lose.
  • Four-plus strong cups in one sitting is a different situation. You're near the dose where measured losses rise, and electrolytes go too. Drink some water alongside, not because coffee is bad, but because you've crossed the threshold that was actually tested.
  • Habituation matters. The reassuring study was in habitual drinkers. If you rarely drink coffee, expect a stronger response to the same dose.
  • Around exercise, stop worrying about it. The meta-analysis found the effect disappears there.

One thing this piece deliberately won't do is sell you a fix. There's no product recommendation here. Does coffee dehydrate you? Not at normal intakes. No. That claim merges three separate papers: a 2015 meta-analysis of 16 studies published in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, a 2016 American Journal of Clinical Nutrition trial that tested 13 beverages rather than reviewing 16 studies, and a 2014 PLOS ONE study that is the actual coffee-specific research.

Does caffeine still act as a diuretic during exercise? The meta-analysis found the mild diuretic effect was negated by exercise. Exercise itself drives fluid conservation strongly enough to override caffeine's modest effect on urine output.
