How to Choose a Water Filter (Pitcher or Countertop)

Every filter buying guide starts with products. This one starts with your water. And then with the two words on the box that decide whether a claim means anything.
Here's the problem with every water filter guide we checked, including the good ones: they rank products for a reader who has no idea what's in their water. Consumer Reports, CNN Underscored, Quality Water Lab, all product-first. The most rigorous of them still never tells you how to pull your own water report.
That's backwards. A filter is a tool for removing something specific. Buying one before you know what you're removing is guessing with extra steps.
So this guide runs in the order the decision actually happens: find out what's in your water, learn to read a certification claim properly, then match a category to your result. The middle step is where most of the money gets wasted, because "NSF certified" and "tested to NSF standards" are different claims, and they sit in the same size type on the box.
The Short Answer
Bottom line: check your water report first, then read the certification line before the marketing line, because a filter can be genuinely certified for chlorine taste while its headline "removes 365+ contaminants" claim rests on nothing more than a one-time lab test.

The sequence that saves you money:
- Pull your Consumer Confidence Report. If you're on a community water system, your utility must send one every year by July 1. It lists what was actually detected in your water.
- Read the certification claim in three tiers: certified by NSF International, certified by another accredited body like IAPMO R&T, or merely tested to a standard. Only the first two are independently maintained.
- Match the standard number to your contaminant. NSF/ANSI 42 is taste. 53 is health. Those are not interchangeable, and the word "certified" alone tells you nothing about which one you're getting.
What's Actually In Your Water?
Start here, before you look at a single product. If you're on a community water system, the answer is already written down and legally owed to you.
Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, community water systems must deliver a Consumer Confidence Report (an annual drinking water quality report) to their customers. EPA's own guidance for consumers is direct about the timing: "Reports must be sent by your water supplier each year by July 1."
If you rent, moved recently, or simply never opened the envelope, you can look yours up through EPA's CCR search tool or by calling your utility directly.
What the report actually tells you
Per EPA, a CCR covers your water's source, a summary of contamination risk, the regulated contaminants that were detected, the health effects of any violations, and what the system did about them. It also carries required educational statements about Cryptosporidium for vulnerable readers, and about nitrate, arsenic, or lead where those are relevant. There's a Safe Drinking Water Hotline on it too: 1-800-426-4791.
What you're looking for is short: which regulated contaminants were detected, and at what level relative to the limit. That list is your shopping list. Everything a filter removes that isn't on it is marketing you're paying for.
If you're on a private well, no report exists
This is the part general buying guides skip entirely, and it changes the whole process. EPA states it plainly: "The quality and safety of drinking water from private domestic wells are not regulated by the Federal Government under the Safe Drinking Water Act."
Nobody tests your well but you. EPA directs private well owners to their state and local health departments for testing guidance, and to certified laboratories for the analysis itself. It's worth doing rather than assuming. EPA notes that water pumped from about one in five wells contained one or more contaminants above a human-health benchmark.
Well water also carries a risk municipal water generally doesn't: microbiological contamination. No pitcher filter addresses that, which is why the sizing-up section below matters more for well readers.
What "NSF Certified" Actually Means
There are three different things a box can be telling you, and they look nearly identical at shelf distance. This is the single most useful skill in filter shopping.

Tier 1: Certified by NSF International
An accredited third party verified the product meets a specific NSF/ANSI standard, and keeps auditing it. These products appear in NSF's own public listing directory, which you can search by brand.
Tier 2: Certified by another accredited body
NSF/ANSI standards are the standards. NSF International is one organization that certifies against them, not the only one. IAPMO R&T and WQA are also accredited to certify to the same numbers.
This tier trips people up constantly, because a product certified by IAPMO won't appear in NSF's directory and can look uncertified to someone checking there. It isn't. AquaTru is a working example. Its own performance data sheet for the ATU100 states: "ATU100 is certified by IAPMO R&T according to NSF/ANSI Standard 42, 53, 58, 401, & P473."
That's a real certification. It's just not an NSF-issued one.
Tier 3: "Tested to" a standard
Here's where the gap opens. "Tested to NSF/ANSI 53" means a lab ran the test. It does not mean anyone certified the product, and it does not imply ongoing auditing.
Two of the most-recommended pitchers on the market sit partly in this tier, and both are more transparent about it than the review sites that cover them:
- LifeStraw Home is described by LifeStraw as "third party tested to the NSF P473 protocol" for PFOA and PFOS. Its own support documentation goes further and states the product "is not currently marketed as certified to those expanded 2022 PFAS updates." Rather than a percentage, LifeStraw publishes an output figure: a maximum result of less than 0.01 micrograms per liter against an NSF requirement of 0.07. That's a more checkable claim than a round number. And notably, the widely-repeated ">99% PFOA/PFOS reduction" figure isn't LifeStraw's own wording.
- Clearly Filtered is, per its product page, "NSF Certified to NSF/ANSI Standards 42 & 372." Standard 42 is chlorine taste and odor; 372 is lead-free materials. Its headline claim ("removes up to 99.99% of 365+ contaminants") rests on independent third-party lab testing, not on NSF certification. The company does publish the lab results, which is more than most.
Neither of these is a scandal, and neither product is bad. The point is narrower and more useful: the certification line and the headline claim are frequently about different things, and the headline is the one on the front of the box.
Which Certification Covers What
The standard number tells you what was actually verified. "Certified" without a number tells you nothing.

The 42-versus-53 distinction is the one worth memorizing. A filter certified only to NSF/ANSI 42 has been verified to improve taste, and nothing more. That covers a large share of budget pitchers.
Note the 372 trap too: "lead-free materials" means the pitcher itself won't leach lead into your water. It is not a lead-removal claim, though it puts the word "lead" on the box.
Match Your Contaminant to a Filter Category
Now (and only now) you can shop. Take the contaminant list from your report and read across.

The last row is the one to take seriously. Filters are not disinfection. AquaTru's own data sheet carries the warning in capitals: "Do not use with water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection before or after the system." That caution applies to essentially every filter in this category, pitcher or countertop.
What the Popular Pitchers Actually Claim

Read that table carefully, because it inverts the usual ranking. The product with the broadest certification is the one that doesn't show up in NSF's own directory. The product with the biggest contaminant number is certified for the narrowest scope. And the product that publishes the most conservative, checkable figure declines to call itself certified at all.
None of which makes any of them a bad buy. It makes the box a bad way to compare them.
When a Pitcher Isn't Enough
Size up when your report shows dissolved solids, nitrates, arsenic, or fluoride (contaminants carbon pitchers largely don't touch) or when you're on well water.
Carbon filtration and reverse osmosis remove different things by different mechanisms. Carbon adsorbs; RO pushes water through a membrane that rejects dissolved solids. That's why the standards are separate, and why a pitcher can hold a legitimate NSF/ANSI 53 certification and still do very little for nitrate.
Countertop RO is the middle option between a pitcher and a plumbed under-sink system: no installation, but a bigger footprint and a higher price.

Included here because it's the one product in this guide whose certification scope we could verify end-to-end against the manufacturer's own data sheet, which is the standard this whole article argues for. It is a different price tier than the pitchers above, so it's an answer to 'my report says I need RO,' not a general upgrade. Its own data sheet also sets inlet limits (TDS up to 1,500 mg/L, hardness up to 10 gpg). Check those against your report before buying, because exceeding them shortens filter life sharply.

If your report shows nothing that needs RO, a pitcher is genuinely the right answer and the cheaper one. Sizing up without a reason on the report is exactly the spending this guide is trying to prevent.
Cost and Maintenance Realities
The purchase price is the small number. Replacement cartridges are the real cost, and filter life is quoted in gallons, not months.
Manufacturers publish filter life in gallons because that's what actually determines it. Marketing translates it into months by assuming a household size, which is why your cartridges never seem to last as long as the box implied.
AquaTru's data sheet is a useful illustration of how uneven this gets within a single product: the pre-filter is rated for 600 gallons, the VOC filter for 360, and the RO membrane for 1,200. Three components, three different replacement cadences.
Two things that shorten filter life faster than people expect:
- Hard water and high dissolved solids. Most systems publish inlet limits; exceeding them doesn't void the filtration so much as burn through it.
- Sediment. Visible particulate loads a filter designed for dissolved contaminants.
Work out cost per gallon rather than cost per cartridge: divide the cartridge price by its rated gallons. It's the only figure that compares a cheap filter you replace often against an expensive one you don't. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-related contaminants and carries over 50 possible reduction claims. A filter certified only to 42 has been verified for taste, not for lead or other health contaminants, which is why the number matters more than the word "certified."
Do I need reverse osmosis, or is a pitcher enough? A pitcher is enough when your report shows a small number of specific contaminants and a certification covers them. Reverse osmosis makes sense when you're dealing with dissolved solids, nitrates, arsenic, or fluoride, which carbon pitchers largely don't address. Reverse osmosis systems are covered by NSF/ANSI 58.
Is a filter certified by IAPMO instead of NSF still legitimate? Yes. NSF/ANSI standards are the standards; NSF International is one certifier of them. IAPMO R&T and WQA are also accredited to certify against the same standards. A product certified by IAPMO won't appear in NSF's own listing directory, which sometimes gets misread as uncertified.
